With working neon on both sides\, each side shows exceptional color and gloss with no filled chipping\, just very light touchups at the edges. An iconic American sign\, Chevrolet launched the OK Used Cars program in the 1920s to assure customers that it was\, indeed\, okay to buy a used car. The program also consisted of a multi-step checklist to inspect each used car sold\, showing that various components were within spec or replaced. It made people feel safer buying a used car\, and removed the stigma of not buying new. In a way\, it was the very beginning of the modern Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) program.   Lot 1238 - Flying A Die Cut Porcelain SignThis single-sided porcelain (SSP) sign was made in the 1930s and is hugely unique as it was manufactured to be affixed to a truck door. Surely very few of these remain today\, and this sign shows great color and gloss throughout with just minor surface scratches and porcelain loss on both the inner and outer fields. There is also porcelain loss and staining on the outer edges and on the hanging holes at the wingtips\, and a spot of touchup paint on the tip of the A. The wings have been secured to the back with professional welds. The A in the Flying A logo roots back to the word Associated in the Associated Oil Company which served products along the west coast of the United States\, Hawaii\, and various parts of Asia. Like many oil companies\, its history is a tangled web of mergers and acquisitions as years rolled on\, but the Flying A brand largely remained intact through the early 1970s.    Lot 1205 - American Model #201 Five-Gallon Visible PumpThis 5-gallon visible pump was manufactured by the American Pump & Tank Company sometime during the 1910s and shows an outstanding restoration with brilliant color throughout\, hand painted lettering\, and brass fixtures. The glass cylinder is in excellent condition\, and overall\, the pump displays incredibly well\, showing only light use wear. It’s perfect for display in pretty much any room\, a true piece of art that will elicit multiple conversations.    Lot 1336 - Wyeth Tires Porcelain Corner SignPeople always seem to love Wyeth Tires signs\, with the kid sitting in the tire wearing a cap and goggles\, and the red\, white\, and blue coloring. This example hails from the 1920s and is a single sided porcelain (SSP) corner sign\, fairly unique\, and shows excellent color and gloss with notable surface scratches and staining on both the inner and outer fields.  The sign\, showing a maker’s mark of\, “Consumers BLDG. CHI\,” shows one porcelain chip on the outer field above the T in Wyeth.  The sign also shows very minor porcelain loss and staining on the outer edges.    Lot 1187 - Gilmore Blue-Green Gasoline Globe LensThis single\, 15-inch Gilmore “Blu-Green” Gas globe lens harkens from the 1920s\, and shows outstanding color and gloss throughout the field. Except for some minor washout along the lower edge with some minor nicks at the top edge\, it appears to be an excellent displaying example. The Blu-Green gasoline was another promotional effort from the mind of Earl Bell Gilmore\, who took advantage of the clear gas globes atop the pumps to sell gas by its color. Red Lion and Blu-Green gasolines fueled cars up and down the West Coast from the 1920s through the 1940s.    Lot 1123 - Use Associated Gasoline SSP SignA rare and amazing single-sided porcelain (SSP) sign from Associated Gasoline featuring the iconic "More Miles to the Gallon" logo\, the field of the sign shows a lovely orange peel-like texture to the porcelain finish. With one small nick in the upper center section of the red field\, there are isolated porcelain chips in the letters G and A in Gasoline. The mounting holes remain solid\, with a few showing porcelain loss and missing grommets. The outer edges of the sign remain clean with the faintest amount of wear all the way around. Otherwise\, a spectacular example of a very rare and unique sign from the ’30s.  Lot 1014 - Shell Service Station Porcelain Neon SignA beautiful single sided porcelain neon (SSPN) Shell Service Station sign from the 1930s\, it shows vivid color\, gloss\, and shine throughout\, including the red neon. The maker mark reads\, “Artkraft 11-37.” Showing very light surface staining and light paint drips on the raised “Shell” lettering\, the sign has minor areas of porcelain loss on the outer edges. There is also a more significant area of porcelain loss on the bottom righthand edge. Connected to a wood frame\, it has newly added electric and transformer.   >> VIEW ALL GSM AUCTION LISTINGS

SUMMARY:Richmond Auctions’ Three-Day Sale
DESCRIPTION:Richmond Auctions will bring the Barkheimer Collection and “The Nines” to market September 19 thru 21. Packed with a variety of original advertising and promotional pieces from the gas & oil\, food & beverage\, and auto industries ranging from pumps to globes to neons to porcelain and various other needful things. One item of particular interest is an obscure Sterling Ignition Cable sign. A quick search online shows a number of modern Sterling spark plug wires\, but finding much information about the company will take more than a search engine sweep. But\, this sign is comprised of etched glass with a metal can and a blue neon surround. Showing some wear\, the neon is said to work fine – all in all\, the look and mystique of a company we know nothing about is luring us in. Check it out here. Another interesting piece is a “Watch Out for Children” cloth banner. Showing great graphics\, the single-sided cloth has tiny holes in the field\, but otherwise seems to be in remarkable condition. While it seems rather pedestrian\, no pun intended\, to get excited over a cloth banner\, the fact of the matter is\, these and paper products are very hard to find. Most were simply used up and discarded – or even just discarded. Thus\, very few remain. They’re not getting easier to find\, and experts agree\, the value will continue to quietly climb on these beautiful pieces. See this one here. Meanwhile\, learn more about the whole sale here.

DESCRIPTION:Packed with stunning original signs\, neons\, gas station equipment\, F&B memorabilia\, and more\, Morphy’s October 6\, 2024 sale should prove to be a terrific event. When I first saw the catalogue\, I was slack-jawed by so many exceedingly rare and unique items on offer – items like a pig sandwich neon sign\, which has an astonishing Texas backstory that paved the way for the likes of McDonald’s; then there’s the Texas Pacific Gasoline and Motor Oil porcelain sign – simply put\, I’ve never seen one. I’d heard of TexPac\, but never have seen a sign; a 1940s Glo-Dial neon clock from Los Angeles reading “Garage Towing” has caught my fancy in a big way; and\, of course\, among the seemingly millions of other amazing items\, there’s a great double-sided porcelain “Fiat Service” sign that’s screaming to come home with me. Years ago\, driving past an antique shop in the middle of the night\, they had a similar sign on display\, but it was in Italian. I called on it the next day\, the price was nearly $600\, if I remember correctly\, way out of my league\, I didn’t need it that badly. I do wish I’d bit the bullet and bought it\, forcing us to live on ramen for a few months. It was a neat sign that the guy on the phone said was an original from the 1950s\, but he knew nothing of how it got to SoCal. And now there’s this one. Take a peek\, see what catches your fancy. Register to bid\, you can begin online. You know\, going through these catalogues reminds me of being a kid thumbing through the Sears Christmas catalogue. Hey – y’know – the holidays are coming… good excuse to go shopping\, right? See ya there. \nFeatured Lots Lot 1136 - Rare Texas Pacific Gasoline & Motor Oils Porcelain Sign w/ Teepee GraphicThis sign is set in the original metal ring which has been painted red. Measures 42" in diameter.   Lot 1495 - Outstanding & Iconic Musgo Gasoline One-Piece Baked Globe w/ Native American GraphicA one-piece baked globe dated September 17\, 1929\, with "Made In USA" ink stamping\, and the outer collar\, this rare and iconic Musgo Gasoline globe presents outstandingly well. The Native American graphic is hand painted on both sides\, with outstanding paint throughout. Measures 16.5" tall.

Reverse-painted glass is as it sounds – the paint is applied directly to the glass\, thus creating two images at once\, the original and the one visible through the glass on the other side. The glass lends the painting a slight depth while protecting the paint on the other side. Measures 26.5" x 4.25" x 10"  Lot 510 - Tune-Up Brakes Mufflers lighted clockHailing from sometime in the 1960s\, this clock features a plastic face with an aluminum can. Presented in striking black and white contrast\, a red second hand matches the simple red dots marking the spots for 1 and 2\, 4 and 5\, 7 and 8\, and 10 and 11 o’clock. Measuring 24.75” it’s perfect for any garage. Or den. Or office.  Lot 605 - Rexall Drugs DSP vertical bullnose neon signStunning red and blue neon gleam on this DSP bullnose sign. The porcelain has some chips in the field and on the perimeter with some rust stains in some areas\, but overall the sign displays very well. Crated size measures 144" x 24" x 51"  Lot 561 - 1941 Wurlitzer Model 850 Peacock JukeboxOne of the most spectacular jukeboxes ever created\, it was by far the most elaborate and ornate\, exhibiting a zenith of technology and American style on the threshold of entering World War II. This one is presented in working condition\, save for one of the two frontal bubble tubes\, and is said to sound great. Set up on “free play” with a credit switch located on the back\, it comes loaded with 24 78 RPM records. Recently professionally serviced\, it’s said to be in exceptional condition. Likely the most spectacular part of the jukebox is the centrally-mounted piece of glass with two peacocks screened to it. Located on Crenshaw Boulevard in Los Angeles\, California\, Harry Mann Chevrolet was reknowned for selling very special Corvettes to enthusiasts with racing and show on their minds and became famous for their specially-prepped Corvettes. 30” x 6”  Lot 665 - Thorobred Tires by Dayton porcelain neon signPresented in working condition\, this two-color\, SSPN sign features a light-up glass panel and metal can. The porcelain signs show bright coloring and good shine with small chips around the perimeter and a 2-inch touch-up in the top panel on the right side of the Thorobred. The Thorobred horse logo is a convex glass panel sign that lights up. The glass panel shows a few areas of light staining. Marked “Kirn Signs. St. Louis\,” it is crated for transport\, the crate measuring 77” x 17” x 60”  Lot 688 - Pontiac Guaranteed Goodwill Used Car single-sided tin neon signA SSTN sign in working order with two-color neon and a metal can\, the tin is painted in red\, white\, and blue.
