For me, it’s largely about the art and survivability. I normally couldn’t give a hoot about rarity or value or any of that. No, for me, it’s my response to the visual and my awe that it’s still on this planet. Did it stop me in my tracks? Do I like looking at it, do I fantasize about where it’s been, who’s held it, what conversations has it been around? Where was it sold? How long ago? Where has it been sitting all this time? Why is it still with us? The upcoming July 19 and 20 Morphy Auctions Automobilia & Petroliana sale has a staggering number of items that cause me to reel with all these questions, making me want to bid and add to the collection – of particular interest are the cans from Duplex and Midland, and a Texaco Fire-Chief Gasoline lithographed cloth service station banner. But there is so much more, from the porcelain, tin, cardboard, and glass genres – there are also gas pumps and a seemingly infinite number of other items. Take a look below, and pop over to their website – I’m sure you’ll see something you can’t live without, something that piques your interest, something that stops you in your tracks. Snap it up, life moves by pretty fast.
