Coming to My Backyard

Coming to My Backyard

Mecum Auctions has been coming to Dallas, Texas for a number of years, and when I moved here, I was excited to be able to partake in the event, living so nearby. This year, however, I’m even more excited as the venue has changed to the Dickies Arena in Fort Worth. The move is likely a great one – the area is adjacent a number of terrific diversions including food, a university, an extensive botanical gardens, a zoo, and many more attractions, including The Stockyards, a favorite spot of mine where they walk the longhorn cattle to and from their resting areas and grazing areas up and down the main drag as they have for over 100 years. It’s truly a sight to see those animals, they’re beautiful in their own right. Aside from this though, the area is slower-paced, more relaxed, less congested, and I think will make for a fabulous experience. See some of the items up for bid below, and stop in to their On Time auctions – there seems to always been something great on offer there, all from the comfort of home!  Hope to see you in Fort Worth!

Lot 442 - - Chevrolet OK Used Double Cars Double-Sided Porcelain Neon Bullnose Sign

Lot 442 - Chevrolet OK Used Double Cars Double-Sided Porcelain Neon Bullnose Sign

Measuring a stout 55x73x29, this sign becomes much more interesting thanks to its portability. Mounted on a base with casters, the sign can more easily be moved around and never has to stay in one place. Maker marked as “Texlite Inc.,” the sign shows gorgeously and would be a great addition to any collection. OK Used Cars was a pioneering program by Chevrolet to assure buyers that used cars from a Chevrolet dealer were a cut above as they’d undergone a multi-point inspection. The program began in the 1920s and inspired other manufacturers and dealers to implement their own programs, which is largely still in place today.

Lot 441 - - Approved Willy's Service Single-Sided Porcelain Neon Sign

Lot 441 - Approved Willy's Service Single-Sided Porcelain Neon Sign

Maker marked as “Walker & Co. Detroit,” this Approved Willy’s Service sign shows beautifully in red, white, and blue porcelain with four neon colors lighting up the scene. Single-sided, it’s perfect for hanging flat on the wall and enjoying as precious art – after all, how many original, neon-lit Willy’s Approved Service signs could have been produced? Pronounced “Will-ess,” not “Will-ees” as so many say, the company was founded in 1908 when John Willys bought the Overland Automotive Division of the Standard Wheel Company and renamed it in 1912. Acquiring a number of companies and patents along the way, the Great Depression would cause absolute chaos at Willys Corporation, and the bankers would bring in Walter Chrysler to restore order. By 1924, Chrysler and his team would move to Maxwell-Chalmers, which would ultimately be the foundation for the Chrysler Corporation. But, Willys-Overland would continue on, building various types of vehicles, usually of the small, efficient design to entice a larger market.

Lot 350 - - Harley-Davidson Display Gas Pump

 Lot 350 - Harley-Davidson Display Gas Pump

Two beams mount this imposing sign vertically to the wall, absolutely commanding attention anywhere. The sign is finished in red, white, and blue and is highlighted by white and yellow neon. Showing minimal wear, it’s wired to a simple ‘on-off’ switch located on the lowest beam. Originally likely meant to hang outside of a showroom, it’s hard to imagine it spent much time outside at all.

Lot 436 - - Polly Gas Bennett Clock Face Gas Pump

Lot 436 - Polly Gas Bennett Clock Face Gas Pump

Restored in the Polly Gas livery, this Bennett clock face gas pump features dual hoses, dual visi-gauges, a contemporary Polly globe in a steel ring, and is maker marked, “Service Station Equipment Company.” Measuring 24x90x21, the Polly livery is very popular among collectors and even non-motoring enthusiasts because of the bright colors and, of course, the parrot. Based in Los Angeles, California, Polly Gas was the fuel brand of the Wilshire Oil Company. Founded in 1915 by brothers George and Victor Machris, the company began as a simple, single service station, expanding through 1951 when Wilshire was purchase by B-L & Associates.
