Designing a Garage-Inspired Storage Room

Designing a Garage-Inspired Storage Room

The house was designed with a small hobby room (8’ x 10’) as you enter from the garage.  At first, the room was outfitted with a wall-mounted 19” CRT TV, treadmill, and sit-up bench.  Along one side of the wall, there was also a small storage rack.  Over time, the storage rack began to get full and as more and more items needed to find a place to “sit for a while,” the small hobby room had suddenly become overrun with items needing storage.  But, everything was in plain view, creating a not-so-organized room.  From car and boat parts to dog houses, sanding tools, and paint supplies, the room had become non-functional.

The first step in organizing is donating or discarding items that are no longer of use.  Cleaning out a room also means finding items that you forgot you even had.  The room was completely cleared out and cleaned.  Next, a fresh coat of paint and fresh window blinds created a blank canvas in which to start designing.

Figuring out the types of cabinets that could house all of the kept items can be a difficult choice as there are attributes of dimensions and overall design that needs to work with the existing interior décor.  There is something alluring about cabinets on wheels – where you can easily move them around. Most interior storage cabinets are meant to be in a fixed position and have a kickboard, making it difficult to move after placing in its location.

When looking for a storage cabinet with wheels it becomes more difficult. Seville Classics is one company that has a collection of cabinets of different sizes for different applications.  Their UltraHD line is sturdy and includes multiple color options.

This house’s specific décor is modern and light with bold color accents.  For this reason, the white UltraHD cabinets with wheels was chosen.  Deciding on the width of the cabinets can also be tricky.  Be sure to measure several times and try a few configurations in your design before solidifying the plans.  This hobby room ended up with three 30” wide storage cabinets.  The cabinet shelves can be placed to what’s convenient for the items being stored.  Ironically, one can never have enough storage and most of the cabinets are already filled up with the items kept from the “clear out” phase.

While the cabinets line one entire wall, the addition of an adjustable-height Husky workbench table was added to the opposite wall.  This table was also available in white, which matched well to the white Seville UltraHD cabinets.  The Husky workbench is available in multiple widths from 46” to 72” and adjusts from 26”to 42” in height.  This room in particular fit a 52” workbench.

Lastly, a new LED TV was mounted to replace the removed 19” CRT TV.  To give “mood” to the room, LED lighting was added to the back of the TV.

Now, the once cramped storage room has become an airy and spacious room with many of the kept items nicely compartmentalized behind storage cabinet doors.  The new workbench also adds a degree of usefulness, allowing for various projects to be performed.  All-in-all, the room has taken on a whole new vibe, it’s clean an organized and invites activity, it’s a place where one actually wants to spend time.
