F&B Has a Lot to Offer

F&B Has a Lot to Offer

A lot of people shy away from collecting memorabilia from the food and beverage industry, and I can’t figure out why. Some of the pieces from that industry are spectacular, with terrific colors, graphics, registrations, ideas, humor – in short, they’re a lot of fun.

And their investment potential is on the rise.

I don’t have a crystal ball, but I watch a lot of auctions and have noticed a steady rise in the number of F&B pieces coming on offer and their sale prices. I can only think it’s occurring because the prices of motor-related memorabilia has hit a kind of ceiling for many collectors, and people are looking for less expensive alternatives to enjoy. Similarly, vintage promotional paper products are beginning to warm up and should be paid attention to. Many well-informed collectors feel paper products are percolating to become the next big thing – but in front of them are F&B pieces.

Richmond Auctions is hosting another spectacular online sale of advertising and memorabilia products, and it is packed with items from the F&B industry. Definitely worth taking a look at and earmarking a few products for your own collection. Spice up your collection with some different pieces from brands long gone or your favorite soda maker or an old restaurant. From thermometers to clocks to hanging signs and much more, there is something for everyone, including a lot of great memories. Register to bid here, take a look at some of the items up for bid below. Hopefully I’ll see you there!!

Featured Lots

Lot 129 - - NOS Dr Pepper Tin Soda Bottle Cap Lot 129 - NOS Dr Pepper Tin Soda Bottle Cap

Marked 4-63 at the bottom, this NOS (new old stock) bottle cap is quite a find. Flaws are few but include a very small scratch halfway down the second “P” in Pepper, some very light staining on the bottom 25% of the white, and it looks as if something dripped on it and left very faint stains which may clean out. From 5-feet away, they can't be seen. Almost impossible to upgrade, a center piece for a Dr Pepper collector.

Lot 143 - - Large Firestone Super Pyro Anti-Freeze Tin Thermometer Sign Lot 143 - Large Firestone Super Pyro Anti-Freeze Tin Thermometer Sign

An astonishing Firestone Super Pyro Thermometer, exceedingly rare, it definitely falls under the heading of “find another one.” With some light scratching throughout, other flaws include aging on the “E” in Super, and most of the word Pyro, a blotch to the left of the “P” in Pyro appears to be on the surface, no cleaning was attempted. Marked US 932-F, and made by the Donaldson Art Sign Co Covington, KY.

Lot 257 - - Royal Crown Cola Tin Sign Lot 257 - Royal Crown Cola Tin Sign

Marked 9 -52, this sign encouraging people to “Drink Royal Crown Cola” hosts a beautiful field, the only flaws being a scratch along the bottom under the words “best by taste,” and some light wear on the edges. For a 70-year-old sign, the graphics retain a striking glow.

Lot 515 - - NOS Coca-Cola Tin Sign Lot 515 - NOS Coca-Cola Tin Sign

An eye-catching illustration encouraging people to take home an entire case of Coca-Cola, this sign appears to have never been hung. It shows a light staining on the bottom edge, and is marked “Robertson” on the lower right corner, but otherwise presents exquisitely.

Lot 523 - - Drink Tested All Flavors Bottled by Coca Cola Bottling Wks Tin Sign Lot 523 - Drink Tested All Flavors Bottled by Coca Cola Bottling Wks Tin Sign

A remarkably rare and unique sign illustrating that all sodas bottled by the Coca-Cola Bottling Works are tested for flavor, consistency, carbonation, and more to ensure customers a drink of expected quality. The sign has slight bends at the top and light scratching along the bottom.

Lot 700 - - Socony Gasoline Curved Porcelain Sign Lot 700 - Socony Gasoline Curved Porcelain Sign

Showing a sweet, uniform gloss and a very light patina with minor scratching and chipping, this curved porcelain sign advertising the “Uniform Quality” and “Best Results” of Socony Gasoline was likely used on a rounded gas pump.
