It’s astonishing how many options are out there for garage flooring. And each choice comes with some multitude of pros and cons, making the decision an absolute labyrinth of questions and conditions. It’s almost as confusing as buying a new car. Having just bought a home in Texas with a slightly oversized 3-car garage, I am facing the options and weighing all the pros and cons. As a freelancer about 20 years ago, I met car collector Bruce Meyer to produce a feature about Clark Gable’s Mercedes-Benz, for which he’s the caretaker.
The flooring in his garage was porcelain tile, which kind of blew me away – I think he saw the shock in my face as I stared at his floors, and he explained that it was a little pricey, but it’s impervious to everything, and as durable as a diamond, which is why he opted for it. Anything spills, just wipe it right up, even if it’s sat for a while, it comes right off – no stain, no drama. It also handles the weight of the cars in stride, and let’s face it, he has some heavy cars like the Mercedes. Apparently that meeting impressed me, as Bruce’s words and the image of the white floor has stuck with me since that day. I am currently looking over various types, colors, sizes, and styles of porcelain to tile the garage. Thanks Bruce! Stay tuned!
