So often, the kneejerk reaction to garage decor is an epoxy floor, white drywall, some LEDs, a bunch of prefab steel cabinets, a workbench and some tool storage. Nothing wrong with that. It’s kind of become a standard look with garages today. But ask yourself, “How much work do I actually do in here?” “Do I use tools?” If not, do you need all that cabinet space and drawers and so on? I’ve been in garages with gorgeous drawers and cabinets and there was nothing in them. Silly waste of money and space, “but it’s how garages are decorated,” they say. Think it through. Ask yourself, “How do I actually use my garage?”
For me, I have a massive collection of posters/wall art and diecast cars. It’s seemingly infinite on both ends, so I’ll need to rotate the art and diecast. That keeps it fresh and fun. But it is work. But it’s fresh and fun. I don’t work on cars, but I love detailing. So, I need just a simple storage set up to keep my detailing supplies in, and a small workbench. My daughter wants to begin building the many, many models I’ve bought over the past 30 years, so the workbench will serve a kind of double duty. My garage is not oversized, so if I’m not careful, I’ll smack the doors on the walls. So, I’m working on some padded wall décor. I also need to rethink where I’ll hang a wall-mounted vacuum, because the side walls won’t work, the vacuum will be an obstruction. This iss bothersome because I wanted to use it to vacuum the cars that live outside. So, an extra-long hose? Maybe. Again – need to think on that, and look at the market and see what the options are. My three-car garage is requiring some thought to accommodate my needs and become my very own. But in thinking it through, I’m learning a lot about myself and how to make a garage very workable.
How do you use your garage? (COMMENT BELOW!)
Thanks for stopping by!
My garage is a working garage. It’s a standard two car garage from the street view. I extended the right side of the garage to add 1.5 cars deep for a workshop. The Two car garage has my Porsche 911 and my Porsche Macan S parked inside. Our truck, unfortunately, must be parked in the driveway. The garage portion has the traditional set of Gladiator storage cabinets on the sides and above. I also store my surfboards, kayak in the overhead. The shop contains my working tools which include multiple metal working machines and welding equipment. The motorcycle is stored there as well. My bicycles are hanging from the ceiling in the shop area. I also have my woodworking equipment in that section as well. In summary, my garage/shop covers car storage, toy storage and working equipment. I use all of the items in the garage on a regular basis.
