World’s Largest Road Art Auction Results
Mecum Auctions is hot off the final day of its successful first annual World’s Largest Road Art® Auction. The six-day auction at Mecum’s company headquarters in Walworth, Wisconsin, saw 92% of the nearly 4,000 lots sold for a total of $10.9 million. Leading the top sellers at the auction was the set of two single-sided Kelly Tires porcelain signs in their original ring (S101) that sold at $265,500. Neon signs also proved to be popular, with the animated Star Lanes sign (S144) selling for $247,800, the 1940 John Deere Caterpillar sign (F455) hammering sold at $177,000, and a rotating Mobil Pegasus neon (F102) claiming $118,000.
It wasn’t just signs that caught the attention of bidders in Walworth, as the auction saw a wide variety of items find new homes, including a 1930 Texaco Fire-Chief Hat Gas Pump Globe (F189) that hammered sold at $82,600 and a Space Patrol Kiddie Ride (S117) that sold for $25,960. The record-sized auction is set for a June 2024 return, happening once again at Mecum Auctions’ home in Wisconsin’s beautiful southeastern lake country, offering Road Art® enthusiasts another opportunity to gather to enjoy the camaraderie the beloved hobby creates.
