When we bought our house three years ago and relocated to Texas from California, we bought a shed. No, I’m not casting stones at my house, I mean we bought a literal shed. Very glad to have married who I did, she understands all too well that the garage is more than just a depository for all things that don’t really have a place. It’s not a dumping ground. She’s seen enough garages while hanging around with me to know there is so much more to the garage than most realize, and she supports it. It also raises the value of a home when it’s got a finished garage. Granted, our garage still needs a lot of work, but it’s coming along. To accommodate all of our holiday gear, of which we have enough to decorate a small hotel in Las Vegas, we bought a shed.
Narrow and relatively long, it was built right between our property line and the house, fitting perfectly. It barely holds everything we’ve got, but it does just enough to keep it out of the garage. But, like the garage, the contents need a bit of adjusting once in a while to make sure everything is still fitting properly and not looking like the aforementioned dumping ground. Case in point, this year, dragging out the Halloween stuff and Thanksgiving stuff, we realized we had a few too many things – so, we got rid of a few items. Similarly, our Christmas décor is now undergoing the same scrutiny. As I poke around in the shed with my wife and daughter, I find myself thinking to add some lights, maybe a set of stairs to make the entry-exit a little easier, some curtains to keep the sun’s rays from fading everything inside. I even thought about going a little nuts and installing a tiny mini split to keep it at a constant temperature inside, maybe something in the low 50s during the winter and low 80s in the summer. When I bring it up though, my wife says something about an electric bill. Whatever. One step at a time.
Colder weather is here, and the timing is perfect to get out there and do something with the garage or shed. Or, maybe have a shed built to alleviate all the stuff in the garage. While it might seem like two spaces to maintain, and it is, it’s well worth it.
Thanks for stopping by!
