The school I attended at a very young age had an older principal who was also very on point with her appearance. Never a thread out of place, hair always kept, makeup, etc., she was sharp to say the least. Sustaining that image was her ride of choice, a Mercedes-Benz 280SL that always had the removable hardtop affixed. Supposedly, she was the original owner, but I was never able to find that out. It was white with a dark blue interior, or maybe black, but one thing was for sure, it was by far the coolest car in the parking lot. I was in love. I always thought the styling was a little weird, but there was something cool in that slightly offbeat design that I couldn’t get enough of.
Around the same time period, I began watching the TV show “Hart to Hart,” and fell in love with their light-yellow Mercedes-Benz 450SL. Of course, they also had a Rolls-Royce Corniche that I was smitten for as well – and their Dino, and their Aston Martin, and their 300TD station wagon. What can I say, they were rich and I agreed with their taste in cars. Then “Matt Houston” arrived prime time with (eventually) his bright red 380SL, which I was gobsmacked over too. Of course, someone on “Dallas” also had an SL, but I never really watched that show. And, growing up in Los Angeles, I was always surrounded by an absolute ocean of cool cars, many of which were SLs. Needless to say, the SL has been a constant in my life, a fairly major influence in my taste in cars and their styling.
So, when I learned about Unique Cars of Palm Beach restoring SLs, I was immediately taken and had to know more. Talking with the owners, I was amazed at the work they’re doing – imagine being able to buy a ‘brand-new’ and improved 1971 280SL. Or maybe a lovingly refreshed but beautifully preserved original is of more interest to you. No problem. Or maybe a later 560SL is more your slant. Again, no problem, they’re getting into those too. Enjoy a peek inside.
