Going Back

Known as the Time Traveler’s Lounge, Denny has created a spectacular garage chock full of collectibles from the 1980s and 1990s.  A child of the times, his heart still jumps at the roar of a 1980 Corvette, and his garage gives him a place to tune into a run of classic MTV videos on a Jumbotron screen.

“The garage was a dog kennel, believe it or not, the guy had dozens of dogs he was raising in here,” Denny said.  “When we bought the house, I thought I could turn it into something better, and I did.”

Interestingly, the garage has a spectacular view of the river that lines the property, creating an indoor-outdoor design scenario.  Installing large, French-style windowed garage doors allowed for relaxing views that seem unstoppable.  And within, the floors have been coated and the walls have been entirely done over with all kinds of collectibles – like giant Swatch watch displays and massive, vintage-inspired posters from Cinzano and the like.  And then there are the bicycles – BMX bikes from the 80’s and 90’s are hung and parked at the walls, the kinds of bikes that kids would ride their hearts out on to go faster and jump higher than ever. Bikes that led hard lives, usually only to be discarded.

“It’s amazing what these bikes have become worth,” he said.  “When I first started buying them, they were fairly cheap – parts were easy to find and fixing them is a breeze.  But today, BMX bikes and the parts are going a little insane.  I’m glad I got these when I did.”

And that’s just some of the stuff – a few Omnibot 2000s have also come to roost in the former dog pen, along with the zany, colorful telephones that used to be the raddest of the rad, and much more.  To boot, he’s brought together a hugely respectable collection of cars.

“The DeLorean was a must have, it represents the ’80s so well, but the Ferrari 308 is a piece of ‘’80s lore too,” he said.  “I mean, what guy in the ’80s didn’t want to be Magnum?”

On top of those, he’s gathered up a Porsche 928 that’s received an extensive restoration, a Porsche 944 similar to the one in “Sixteen Candles,” a 1980 Chevrolet Corvette that his dad bought and turned over to him because he couldn’t fit in it, and a 1990 Lotus Esprit that’s been worked over so well, it churns out over 450 horsepower.

“It’s all about having fun and reliving some of those early, special days,” Denny said.  “By collecting items we all loved as kids, we can kind of relive a better, simpler time, and maybe more importantly, share those memories with a younger generation that didn’t get the benefit of that experience.”
