Framed Wallpaper

My first apartment was much like many of the garages featured in GSM.  There was no wall space to speak of, every inch was covered with some kind of poster or another.  I felt so adult running to Walmart and buying the cheap big frames – they were nightmarishly cheesy, and just itching to fall apart, but once hung, they worked okay.  Especially for a college kid.  I lived in a gallery.  Even the ceilings were decorated, and I loved it.

Fast forward to today, and I am drowning in posters.  I’ve collected them since I was old enough to ride my bike to the mall and buy them.  Having gotten my first job at age 11, I usually had money, so that was a problem – I was always armed and ready to buy.  It wasn’t long before I learned the practice of rotating the art – keeping some posters up for a few months, then switching them out for others.  Most of these posters remain with me today, but I gave some to friends when I moved here because I had too many.  I still have too many, but we’re having fun framing them.  Or starting to frame them.  We’ve been working on it for about a year now and have a few ready to hang.  But, of course, the garage needs to be painted and the floor installed… it’s always something, but the goal in the end is to return to the glory of the first apartment – that gallery of zany posters and prints all over the place, like framed wallpaper.  Interestingly too, I’ve now got a few neons I can hang, something the apartment didn’t get to enjoy.

While the upcoming Mecum Auctions in Dallas won’t be rife with posters, you might find a few neat ones on their On Time website.  Great place to find all kinds of odds and ends.  But, their Road Art division is bringing a lovely couple of collections of automobilia and petroliana to Dallas, which is sure to tempt anyone.  Check it out, maybe there’s something there to build on your special place’s cool vibe.
