Paul Oliver takes us on a very cool tour of Australia this time around, a unique place hidden away in Karoondah! Nope, I’ve never heard of it either, but looking it up brings to mind a lot of opportunity for adventure.
Another gem I hadn’t heard of before though is Copshaholm. Eric Monterastelli, our buddy over at the Break/Fix Podcast, brought it to my attention by way of working with the Studebaker Club in South Bend, Indiana. Officially known as the Concours d’Elegance at Copshaholm, the event is held on the grounds of a gorgeous estate built between 1895 and 1896 for a wealthy industrialist and his family. One of the first homes in South Bend, Indiana to have electricity, the stone-and-wood mansion sits on 2.5-acres of wooded property complete with gardens, a tea house, a rose garden, a tennis lawn, a pergola, and a fountain. It’s an absolutely exemplary setting for a concours. This being its 8th year, the concours grew into a two-day affair this year, spanning July 10-11, and proved to be a spectacular event. July 10 kicked off with the Concours d’Lemons South Bend, a lecture forum, and a Collectors Celebration Dinner, all bringing a lot of texture and breadth to the Concours held the next day. This year, the Concours spotlighted 100 Years of Pontiac and was flanked by the likes of Auburn, Cord, and Duesenberg. Using the French Style of Concours judging, attention is paid to presentation, style, body design, provenance, cultural influence, and rarity, giving some leeway to outright factory correctness.
