Gift to the DeLorean

Gift to the DeLorean

One of the first things I wanted to get for the DeLorean when I became its caretaker was a set of DMC-branded floormats.  Since I was a kid, those were the coolest things in the world to adorn the car.  As I got older, and spent more time with DeLoreans and their owners, I realized I was not alone – they were everywhere.  Slowly, they became boring to me – a DeLorean already has a little trouble standing out in a crowd of other DeLoreans, so furthering the twinning with floormats seemed cliché.  But one thing was for sure – my particular DeLorean needed mats.

The car was in gorgeous condition when I got it, just in need of the typical DeLorean upgrades to supersede the factory deficiencies these cars are often plagued with.  But overall, it looked and ran terrific.  For a car this well-kept, the floormats it came with were a little shocking – they were smaller, slippery, pure rubber mats.  The kind you buy hanging from an end cap at an auto parts store.  The did their job, but definitely weren’t the most aesthetically pleasing.  They certainly didn’t fit the image of an upscale sports-GT car.

Coco Mats seemed to be the perfect solution.

GSM and Coco Mats worked together several years back on a storage issue.  We were demonstrating products that might come in handy putting a car in outdoor, carport storage, in this case a close-to-mint-condition 1979 Chevrolet Caprice Classic, and Coco Mats provided a set of mats for the job.  They were gorgeous and the quality and craftsmanship was astonishing.  To this day, whenever the trusty Caprice ventures to a cars ’n coffee or any sort of car gathering, there’s at least one comment about the mats.  So, given our track record with Coco Mats, we thought we’d try again.

Interestingly, when we worked with them on the Caprice, they had a pattern to make mats for the 1966-1976 full size Chevrolet, and the 1991-1996 full size Chevrolet, but no one had ever ordered any floor dressings for a ‘square body’ full size Chevrolet, the “downsized” 1977-1990 models.  So, Coco Mats sent us a big sheet of butcher paper, and we traced out the front and rear footwells and sent them back to the company.  Within a couple of weeks, a big box arrived, and there they were, the beautiful palm-woven, heavy-backed floormats that absolutely gave the Caprice a finished look.

For the DeLorean, it was much the same.  No one had ever ordered a set of Coco Mats for a DeLorean before.  So, they sent us the butcher paper, some samples of floormat materials, a pen, and a nice greeting card, all boxed up beautifully.  Borrowing the famous DMC-branded mats from some friends, we traced them on the butcher paper, picked the type of material we wanted, and sent in the kit.  Within a couple of weeks, a big, flat box showed up with our light-medium grey wool mats with black piping and a rubber heel pad for the driver’s side.  Absolutely gorgeous, and they fit like a glove in the footwells and truly look the part.

Coco Mat has long provided custom mats for enthusiastic owners, especially in the world of Porsche, BMW, Audi, and Mercedes-Benz, but a multitude of other makes and models as well.  They’ve expanded their lineup from literally mats made from palm leaves to using various materials to achieve various looks and textures, but two things nicely remain the same – the quality and the look.
