If you remember that name, chances are, you’re no spring chicken. Robert Urich was one of my television heroes growing up – I watched him as “Spenser: For Hire” in the 1980s and later caught reruns of him in “Vega$,” a show that preceded Spenser, meaning I was just a wee bit young for it. But, the reruns further expanded on my interest in him.
Generally speaking, his characters were fairly arrogant and alpha, bordering on know-it-alls, especially in the case of Dan Tana, the character he played in “Vega$.” What I always thought was unique about both Spenser and Tana was that they both lived in offbeat properties – Spencer in a retired firehouse and Tana in a props building behind the Desert Inn hotel. True enough, Spencer began in an apartment, but that would burn down and the city, thankful for his saving a fire fighter, gave him the unused firehouse. Both the firehouse and the props building allowed Urich’s characters to park within the home. Very cool, something I really wanted to do, and something the owner of our feature garage can do. A restored dealership with three buildings on the property, the owner and his wife have renovated the situation to an enviable level, complete with all kinds of gas and oil products, signs, and much more – when you pop over to look at the pictures and visit his website, pay attention for surprises and details – this place is truly off the charts.
Meanwhile, enjoy all the other bits and pieces this edition brings with it – including a note from our new columnist, Paul Oliver. Hailing from Australia, he brings interesting stories and insights from another nation, something Garage Style has long done, with notes from car guys all around the world. I don’t know about you, but especially in the case of the English and Australians, I love their use of words – very slick.
Enjoy.
