A Car Guy Shopping Mall

A Car Guy Shopping Mall

It’s an addiction, and I have it bad.  I love car stuff.  I’ve been collecting since I was a kid, it started at the Los Angeles Auto Show, where they had a hall dedicated to all-things accessories and collectibles.  I’d buy keychains to cars I didn’t have, detailing supplies, posters, models, and so much more.  I had a ball.  Then came junkyards and swap meets and – it just spiraled out of control.  Years later, I would discover auctions.  This is when things got dangerous – the accessibility to so many cool things seemed limitless, and between all my little haunts around SoCal, limitless absolutely described the opportunities to acquire cool car paraphernalia.  Mecum Auctions really highlights my weaknesses, they host so many auctions with so much automobilia and petroliana, and now, of course, they have their On Time Auctions online.  I can bid from anywhere at anytime.  Imagine being able to hit the mall at 3 A.M.  That’s what this is.  Madness, and I love it.  Two collections are up for grabs currently, one which is a little emotional, as it belonged to their beloved commentator, John Kraman.  A great guy, he was a hoot to talk cars with, and he really knew his stuff.  Anyway, take a peek below, and have fun!

The Thomas-Martz Collection at Kissimmee

It’s rare that a collection stuns us here at Garage Style, but  The Thomas-Martz Collection is one that does just that – in fact, it leaves us gobsmacked.  The absolute array of pieces the collection is comprised with is beyond spectacular, it’s one of those once-in-a-lifetime amassments that the mind has trouble comprehending.  And it’s coming on offer at Mecum’s Kissimmee 2026 event.  Here are a few of our favorites.

Featured Lots

Lot 122 - - Phillips 66 Double-Sided Porcelain Neon Sign

 Lot 122 - Phillips 66 Double-Sided Porcelain Neon Sign

Manufactured by Federal Electric, this original double-sided badge-style Phillips 66 sign presents gorgeously. The reddish-orange and black finish are accented by red and green neon.  When Route 66 was being constructed in the 1920s, people were excited at the prospect of a single highway leading from Chicago to Los Angeles.  The Phillips 66 sign debuted in 1930, just 3-years after the company opened up, and was inspired by a 66 MPH test run on a stretch of Route 66 in Oklahoma.  The Phillips 66 sign combines the shape of the US highway sign with the 66 MPH speed of the test run.

Lot 138 - - Oldsmobile Service Double-Sided Porcelain Dealership Sign

Lot 138 - Oldsmobile Service Double-Sided Porcelain Dealership Sign

Complete with the original ring, this double-sided porcelain Oldsmobile dealership service sign hails from the 1950s and looks to be in magnificent condition.  Oldsmobile would introduce the ‘Ringed Globe’ emblem for 1949 to personify the division’s efforts in advanced engineering and design.  Appearing on Oldsmobile’s first official Indy 500 Pace Car in 1949, the Oldsmobile 88 used the industry’s first high-compression V-8 engine aptly named the Rocket 88.  It was one of the fastest cars on the road and in NASCAR competition.

Lot 938 - - Chevrolet Vertical Double-Sided Neon Sign

Lot 938 - Chevrolet Vertical Double-Sided Neon Sign

Two beams mount this imposing sign vertically to the wall, absolutely commanding attention anywhere.  The sign is finished in red, white, and blue and is highlighted by white and yellow neon.  Showing minimal wear, it’s wired to a simple ‘on-off’ switch located on the lowest beam.  Originally likely meant to hang outside of a showroom, it’s hard to imagine it spent much time outside at all.

Lot 837 - - Oldsmobile Service Double-Sided Bullnose Porcelain Neon Sign

Lot 837 - Oldsmobile Service Double-Sided Bullnose Porcelain Neon Sign

Using a flange-style mount, this double-sided bullnose sign shows beautiful yellow and red porcelain with minimal wear.  The blue, yellow, and white Ringed Globe emblem is mounted at the top toward the flange and surrounded in a circle reading “Oldsmobile Service.”  The green neon glows perfectly.  For 1956, Oldsmobile would introduce a new emblem, retiring the Ringed Globe for a spicier look of stars upon a circle.
