The Best of Show

The Best of Show

In Concoursland, it’s the most coveted of all the awards.  It’s the prize that says, “The judges have convened, spoken, argued, and agreed that this vehicle is the finest on the green today.”  It’s a pat on the back, a sigh of relief, and majorly humbling, especially to those who are placing for the first time.  It’s verification that, yes, all that hard work, blood, sweat, tears, and money were well spent.  So in reporting about this year’s Monterey Car Week, I was thrilled to see that six of Garage Style’s friends and alumni placed at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, including Jim Patterson, who’s won the Pebble Beach Best of Show three times now.  You can see more about them below, along with some reporting, admittedly a tad late, on the lovely Valleta Concours in Malta, an event I am looking forward to attending sooner than later.  Thanks for stopping by, and enjoy – and please, forward this to friends and family!

Garage Style alum win Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance

It’s always exciting to see friends, either those who’ve been featured in GSM or just subscribers, win awards, especially when it’s the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.  This year, no less than six friends and alum took home awards, read more here, maybe you remember their features in the magazine.

Jim Patterson has a number of things to be proud of, most recently perhaps being the honor of his 1937 Mercedes-Benz 540K Special Roadster earning the Best of Show Award, the European Classic Touring (Class J-2), and the Mercedes-Benz Star of Excellence Award at the 2023 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.  The Roadster is one of just three surviving examples and was said to have been originally owned by the Shah of Afghanistan.  This is Patterson’s third time taking home the coveted Best of Show Award, his 1924 Isotta Fraschini Tipo 8A F. Ramseier & Cie Worblaufen Cabriolet taking the honor in 2015, and his 1933 Delage D8 de Villars Roadster earning the Best of Show in 2010, the year Garage Style Magazine featured the Patterson Collection in issue 11.

Another GSM alum taking home a Concours honor was Ann Fagan, who’s 1962 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster took 1st in Class L-2: Postwar Preservation, while the 1958 Ferrari 250 GT Pinin Farina Cabriolet of The Ann Brockinton Lee and Robert M. Lee Automobile Collection took 2nd.  The Lee collection also took 1st in Class O-4: Postwar British Luxury for their 1958 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud I “Honeymoon Express” Freestone & Webb Drophead Coupe.  Interestingly, GSM has yet to feature either winner, but they’ve been longtime subscribers and friends.

Another GSM alum taking home a Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance honor was Peter and Merle Mullin, whose 1939 Delahaye 165 Figoni et Falaschi Cabriolet took 1st place in Class E-2: Figoni Centennial 1938-1948, and was nominated for the Best of Show Award.  The Mullin Museum was featured in Issue 13, while his private office was featured in Issue 21.  Sharing the Class E-2 honor was Dana and Patti Mecum, who’s 1947 Delahaye 135 MS Figoni et Falaschi Narval Cabriolet took 3rd.  While the Mecum Collection hasn’t been featured in the pages of GSM, we are hoping to open those doors soon.

Class G: Duesenberg saw Helen and Jack Nethercutt’s 1936 Duesenberg SJN Rollston Convertible Coupe take 2nd place.  The Nethercutt Collection in Los Angeles, California is a stunning array of vehicles arranged in an amazing collection of not just cars, but musical instruments and fine furniture.  Yet to be featured, the collection will be appearing soon.

Meanwhile, the Phil Hill Cup was awarded to GSM alum, Jonathan and Wendy Segal, for their 1957 Maserati 200SI Fantuzzi Spyder, which also scored 2nd in Class O-1: Postwar Sports Racing.  The Segal Collection was featured in Issue 49 of GSM and we’re looking forward to seeing their new facility.

So, here’s to all the winners along with all those who made the pilgrimage to show their vehicle on the lawn at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, particularly those who’ve worked with GSM in any number of ways.  Thanks for opening your doors to us and congratulations!

Speaking of concours – Valletta

We covered the Valletta Concours back in July, but were excited to see that Hans Emere, who took the Best of Show at the 2022 Valletta Concours d’Elegance with his 1930 Cadillac 454 Fleetwood All Weather Phaeton, also took the Classic Car Club of America Trophy at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.  See the pictures of the event south of Sicily in the article: Days in Malta
