A Busy Day

Even if I do say so myself, this edition of the GSM newzine is pretty spectacular.  Mecum Auctions shows us some remarkable options to help begin collecting or build upon a collection; the USPS talked to me about their latest motor-related stamps and connected me to Beto, one of the photographers behind the Lowriders Forever series; and after years of back-and-forth, our buddy Ron and I finally got together to publish his lovely gallerage.  That in and of itself is nothing short of extraordinary.

Ron and I became friends through Facebook a few years ago.  He would share pictures of his cars and garage, and I was smitten by what he had created.  I began asking him if we could publish the garage, and he was interested, but timing and wanting certain items included, and static in life from various points on both sides caused us to delay multiple times.  In the end, I think the delays were well worth it.  As his story unfolded, I realized this is a lot more than just a garage – as Ron says, he’s curated his garage.  He’s curated his home as well, carefully bringing together items of inimitable rarity and reputation, aptitude and style, ranging from his furniture to his art to the cars.

As an example, he has the complete, ultra-rare Louis Vuitton luggage set for a BMW i8, of which it’s thought only 10 were ever made and many have been broken up.  Much of his furniture has been handcrafted in Fiji and his tunes are delivered by way of Bang & Olufsen stereo components.  Needless to say, he’s brought together items of discernable value and discriminating taste, and when the items are of this nature, they stand on their own merit and speak volumes about the caretaker who chose them to be part of his or her life.  As such, Ron has gone with the minimalist approach of less is more.  Surrounded by such items, who needs more?  While it’s a little foreign to many of us, Ron’s place inspires collectors to consider the practice.
