Attending an auction today is way too easy. With telephone and internet bidding, you can buy fantastically cool things from your favorite chair in your home. Or in your garage. Regardless, it’s easy, which makes acquiring and surrounding ourselves with the needful things we love more enjoyable in many ways. Of course, there’s no substitute for being there. Especially an auction. Where you get to meet like-minded people, see spectacular items up for bid, hear the crowd and the tatter of the auctioneer, and actually be part of the action. It’s a personal preference, and some people love doing both. Mecum’s 36th Original Spring Classic kicks off May 12 in Indianapolis, Indiana and will prove to be a week’s worth of Willy Wonka for car folks – and the collections coming on offer are out of this world. Take a peek at a few of the offerings below, or pop over to their website here to learn more! Hope to see ya there! Enjoy!

Among the headlining collections slated for Indy 2023, The McCalmon Museum Collection features a large selection of tin, porcelain and neon signs, which advertise various automobile-related and beverage brands, along with a smattering of other pieces. Highlights from the collection include an original Texaco double-sided porcelain sign in the green, white and red Texaco livery, an original Bendix double-sided bullnose sign with two colors of neon, and an original, single-sided Ford porcelain neon sign with blue and white neon.

Meanwhile, the Mike and Jen Bunning Collection comprises a wide variety of different pieces, ranging from pedal cars, bicycles, kiddie rides and vintage arcade-style games, to signs, barbershop items, gas pumps and more. Among the more playful items are a working Hillshire Farm & Kahn’s Go-Kart powered by a Briggs and Stratton Fun Power 5 HP engine and a Bally Twin Win Pinball Machine. Other featured lots from the Bunning collection includes a contemporary single-sided Chevrolet tin neon with three colors of neon, a 1964 Gulf single-sided porcelain sign and a two-color Wirth Florist double-sided neon sign.

Also slated for the Indy Road Art stage are three unique pieces, each set to run on Saturday, May 20. The 1950s Delco-Remy sign features red back-lit channel letters, upgraded from neon to LED, and it once adorned one of the buildings at the Delco-Remy plant in Anderson, Indiana. The letters were taken home by one of the plant managers many years ago before the plant closed and the buildings were torn down. There’s also a unique custom-built 1957 Chris-Craft Sportsman Boat Bar that features a wine rack, mini fridge, custom wine glasses and more, as well as an original, single-sided Cadillac porcelain neon dealership sign from the 1930s to 1940s.
