Letter from the Editor: Learning to Fly

Letter from the Editor: Learning to Fly

Doing it all over again, but in an entirely different fashion, is a strange phenomenon.  We launched a full-blown magazine to international distribution, an impressive subscriber list, great advertiser support, and a seemingly never-ending supply of content. And now, we’re slowly traversing the cusp of reinvention, the digitization of a once great printed piece of niche publishing.

Slightly off topic here, but while it’s easy to see so much of what I’ve digitally laid out over the past couple of years as a lot of advertising and very few stories, please know that very few of those stories that look like paid advertisements were actually paid for – the great vast majority were written and placed by me thinking you all might like to find out more.  That said, as much as I miss print, I am more excited everyday by the prospects in digital publishing.

The fact that we can intertwine the printed concept with both radio and television in an online forum is fascinating to me and absolutely rife with opportunities.  Case in point, you might enjoy some of the Break/Fix podcasts below produced by our new associate, Eric Monterastelli of Gran Touring Motorsports.  The magazine couldn’t have brought these to you easily.  And yes, we are working on some video tours of collections and garages, which will first appear here, on the newsletter, giving you some exclusive, motion picture peeks into some spectacular spaces.  Bear with us as we learn to fly again, and thanks for your patience.  Meanwhile, enjoy the podcasts and other nuggets of joy.

From the other side of the fence, to Amelia Island. The Bill Warner Story

Tonight’s guest has been around automobiles his entire life.  On weekends, he worked as a “gopher” for the dealership racing team and became enthralled with motor racing. His photographs and writing have appeared in Road & Track, Car and Driver, Autoweek, The Atlantic Monthly, Automobile, Automotor und Sport, Classic & Sportscar, Porsche Panorama, and Forza to mention a few.  He has competed in the Cannonball Baker Sea-to-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash known to many of us as just “The Cannonball Run” as well as the Firestone/Firehawk series, winning the IMSA Media Challenge (for racing journalists) in 1984-1986. And if that wasn’t enough, he also restores and collects interesting cars, and in 1996, founded the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance near his home of Jacksonville, Florida.  Listen to him here

An Evening with Dennis Gage

Growing up on a small family farm in northwestern Illinois, our guest started tinkering with machines at an early age and purchased his first motorcycle, a 50cc Honda Cub by 12, and his first car, a ’59 Ford Thunderbird, at age 15. He’s played guitar and trumpet in a variety of rock, folk, and school bands.  He continued his automotive interest and, through the course of his college years, owned a number of muscle and sportscars.  He also kept up his music, playing in local coffee houses, and has opened for acts such as Charlie Daniels, Waylon Jennings and Dr. Hook.  Now, You might be saying to yourself, my goodness… we have a Rockstar in our presence!  And in fact, you’d be right, we have the Rockstar of the Classic Car World with us tonight on Break/Fix.  My Classic Car, hosted by the handlebar mustachioed host Dennis Gage premiered as a one-of-a-kind weekly series on TNN in January of 1997, and it hasn’t been off the air since!  The show captures America’s love affair with the automobile, and we’re here to capture Dennis’ story in this episode. John Davis –  Celebrating 42 years of MotorWeek with John Davis

As MotorWeek’s host for the show, now celebrating its 42nd season, John Davis has the opportunity to put all of the new car models through extensive road tests and to judge their practicality for buyers.  He also acts as final editor on all of the new car road test segments and writes many of the test opinions as well as other portions of the program.  John started as a mechanical and aerospace engineering graduate, and has been on commercial radio and television programs nationwide for over four decades. His weekly program offers him that rare chance to bring the enjoyment of a hobby to his professional life, and to use his broadcasting, engineering and analytical expertise to supply information and insight to those who enjoy cars.  Tonight we are proud and honored to share John’s story with our audience!  Listen to him here
